What is an electronic signature?

An electronic signature or eSignature is symbolic digital data attached to an electronic document as a means of verification for the sender’s intent to sign this document.

How are eSignatures better than handwritten “wet” signatures?

  1. eSignatures are intuitive and simple to use. In most cases, you can just eSign with your finger on the screen of your mobile phone. No special skills required whatsoever!

  2. It is really fast and can save hours of business time. Even if you need five signers that are all located in different countries to sign a single document, you can still get that document eSigned by all of them in a matter of minutes. Provided all five are online, of course.

  3. Esigning instead of signing on paper is very cost-effective. Once you switch to e-signatures, you'll start saving immediately - on ink, toner, fax, paper, stationery, electricity, space in your office and so on. Depending on how large your business is, the saving effects may reach thousands of dollars per year!

  4. eSignatures are secure and compliant. When building a complex eSignature workflow in ArcSite, you can require a signer to authenticate their identity using various methods. This will ensure that your document is signed by the right people. Detailed document histories allow you to track all changes made in a document, and audit trails display a signers's email and IP address.

Are electronic signatures legal?

eSignatures are legally binding in 50 US states. There are two regulations establishing the legality of electronic signatures – the U.S. Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act (ESIGN, 2000 ) and the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act (UETA, 1999 ).
