The Fence Builder provides a powerful head start by automatically creating the most relevant bundles from your product data. Once this "first pass" is generated, you'll likely want to fine-tune this environment to match your specific needs and correct any errors.
Your next steps will likely include at least one, if not both, of the following:
Editing existing products or bundles that were generated by the Fence Builder
Please see the articles below for more detailed guidance on how to proceed:
Building from scratch any products or bundles that were not generated
If you are building from scratch, please click here to review those relevant topics in our fence setup course.
We've described below some of the most common scenarios you'll encounter/corrections you will need to make. While these scenarios are some of the most common, this is not an exhaustive list. Please see our Advanced Topics article here for more guidance on topics such as labor, quantity conversions, custom quantity expressions, nested bundles, and more.
Common Corrections You May Need to Make:
Creating Different Versions of the Same Fence (or gate, post, etc.)
Correcting an incorrect quantity of Products defined in a Bundle
Differentiating between gate kits and gate parts
Customizing generic items that need to be more specific
Getting rid of duplicate Products
Creating Different Versions of the Same Fence (or gate, post, etc.)
Your business may offer variations of a single fence style based on color, style, heights that weren't included in the initial build, etc. You can easily add these additional variations to your library by duplicating an existing bundle and modifying as needed. (The same logic works if you need to duplicate and modify gate and post bundles as well!)
How to do it:
Navigate to your Product Library and find the "base bundle" you want to create a version of (e.g., "6ft Wood Privacy Fence").
Select the bundle and choose to Duplicate it.
Rename the duplicated bundle to reflect the specific variation (e.g., "6ft Wood Privacy - Driven Posts" or "6ft Wood Privacy - 1-inch Picket Spacing").
Edit the new bundle.
Adjust the products and/or quantities inside to match the variation.
For a driven post version, you might remove "Concrete" and add a "Post Driving Fee" product.
For different picket spacing, you would adjust the formula for the quantity of pickets.
For a different height, you would swap out the posts, pickets, and/or panels for the new height.
Correcting an incorrect quantity of Products defined in a Bundle
The Fence Builder uses common industry rules to calculate how many of each part is needed. However, your specific installation methods might differ. For example, the AI might calculate two brackets per section, but your team uses four. You can adjust these quantity rules as needed to conform to your company's specifications.
How to do it:
Find the bundle with the inaccurate calculation in your Product Library and select to make it active and displayed
Locate the product whose quantity you want to adjust (e.g., Posts).
Under the Quantity column, adjust the quantity rule as needed. (Click here if you need more explanation of how to set quantity rules.)
Differentiating between gate kits and gate parts
The Fence Builder may have created a single "Gate Assembly" bundle that includes all the components needed to build a gate. However, you might want to sell that as a complete "Gate Kit" while also allowing customers to purchase the hinges, latch, or frame separately. This gives your team flexibility. They can use the all-in-one "Kit" for new installations or access individual parts for repairs and custom jobs.
How to do it:
Review the gate bundle the AI created. Rename it if necessary to be clear it is a "Kit" or "Assembly" (e.g., "4ft Walk Gate Kit"). This is your pre-packaged solution.
Go to the main Product Library and search for the individual components (e.g., "Gate Hinge," "Gate Latch," "Upright").
If they don't appear as standalone products, it means the AI created them only for use within the bundle.
Simply use the Create Product button to create these items as individual, sellable products in your library.
Ensure they are placed in an appropriate category (e.g., "Gate Hardware") for easy access.
Customizing generic items that need to be more specific
The AI might misinterpret a line from your spreadsheet and collapse distinct items into one generic product. For example, it might create a single product named "Pickets" when you actually sell 4-foot, 6-foot, and 8-foot pickets as separate items. To fix this, you'll want to create separate products for each item.
How to do it:
Find the overly broad product in your Product Library (e.g., "Pickets").
Edit this product and Rename it to be specific (e.g., "6ft Cedar Picket").
Use the Create Product button to add the other specific items that were missing (e.g., "4ft Cedar Picket," "8ft Cedar Picket"). Or you can duplicate the original product and just rename it and/or adjust pricing as needed.
Finally, go into any bundles that were using the old generic product and Edit them to use the correct, specific picket product instead.
Getting rid of duplicate Products
You may find duplicate products in your library if an item was accidentally included on multiple spreadsheet tabs, or if slight differences in naming ("80lb Concrete" vs. "Concrete - 80lb Bag") caused the AI to see them as two separate items.
How to do it:
Identify the which of the duplicate products you will keep and which one needs to be deleted. It's a good idea to give the one you're keeping a distinct name if you haven't already.
Go into any bundles that use the incorrect duplicate you plan to remove, remove the incorrect product, and then add the correct one (if it is not already there).
Once the incorrect duplicate is no longer used in any bundles, you can safely delete it from your product library. (You will need to do this manually in the user site.)
