Using Snapping to make objects snap, or not snap, together

What is object snap?

Object snap is a setting that helps ArcSite automatically connect one object or line to another. When enabled, the app detects nearby endpoints, grid lines, and edges and snaps your drawing to them as you work โ€” so things line up the way you intend.

You can confirm a snap is happening by looking at the magnification indicator in the top-left corner of the screen. When a snap occurs, you'll see an X appear there.

Turning object snap on and configuring it

Object snap is enabled by default. To view or adjust its settings:

  • Open the Settings dialog.

  • Locate the Object Snap section.

  • Use the individual toggles to control which snap types are active โ€” endpoints, grid lines, edges, and more.

Enabling the snap types you work with most often will speed up your drawing by reducing the need to manually align objects.

When to turn object snap off

In complex areas with many overlapping lines, object snap can sometimes work against you. The app may struggle to determine which snap point you actually want, causing your line to jump to the wrong location.

In these cases, you can temporarily disable object snap to take manual control:

  • Go back into Settings.

  • Toggle off Object Snap at the top level to disable all snap points at once.

  • Draw your line and pick the exact connection point yourself.

  • Re-enable object snap when you're done with that area.

Tip: Zooming in on a complex area before drawing can help the app determine the correct snap point, and may let you keep object snap enabled.

Summary

Object snap is a powerful tool for accurate drawing, but there are times when turning it off gives you more control. Use the Settings dialog to quickly toggle it on or off as your work requires.
